I get asked a lot about the use of the phrase “we the people” in the context of tattooing. I am a firm believer that we must all share in the responsibility of helping others, especially those who are less fortunate.
The phrase we the people is a reference to the idea that all of our thoughts, opinions, and actions are always being projected onto others. It’s how we all feel so closely related.
This idea is actually pretty difficult to put a finger on. I think the closest I can come is that it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. This is a common misunderstanding. Most people think that if we share our thoughts, opinions, and actions, that it makes them less powerful. But this has nothing to do with this. If you have a great idea, if you have a voice, if you are an opinion leader. you are more likely to take ownership of your ideas, opinions, and actions.
In fact, we should be sharing our thoughts, opinions, and actions not for the purpose of making ourselves more powerful, but so that those who are less powerful (ourselves) can take greater responsibility for their actions. The same goes for our tattoos and our faces. These are not signs of personal worth, but rather means of expressing ourselves and sharing our lives.
As tattoo artists, we have the opportunity to speak to the public in many ways. We can speak about the benefits and drawbacks of tattooing for people with disabilities, we can speak about the various health concerns associated with the tattoo process, we can speak about the risks and benefits of wearing body paint, and so on and so forth. We can also speak to the public in general about how tattoos are no longer a private matter.
